Ultra-pure Quartz: The "Transparent Magician" of the High-tech World

Contact us

Before introducing ultra-pure quartz, let's first understand what quartz is.

Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon dioxide (SiO), with a chemical structure of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra ([SiO]) forming a three-dimensional network crystal, belonging to the trigonal crystal system. It has excellent chemical stability (resistant to acids and corrosion) and dielectric properties. Ultra-pure quartz (Ultra-High Purity Quartz, UHPQ) refers to quartz materials with a SiOpurity of 99.998% (4N8 grade) or higher, with the total amount of impurity elements (such as Al, Fe, Ti, Na, K, etc.) usually less than 20 ppm (parts per million). Due to its extremely high chemical purity and structural stability, ultra-pure quartz has excellent optical transmittance in the ultraviolet-visible-infrared bands, as well as an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion (5.5×10⁻⁷/), excellent high-temperature resistance (softening point > 1700), and excellent dielectric properties. The tablet computers we play with, the solar water heaters in our homes, and even the spaceships flying in the sky, all rely on a magical material - it is as shiny as glass but tougher than steel. This is ultra-pure quartz! Today, let's get to know this "transparent magician" hidden in the high-tech world!

If you have ever picked up a white and shiny, hard stone by a river, it might very well be quartz! Quartz is a mineral baby nurtured by Mother Nature, with countless "silicon-oxygen building blocks" in its body, which are neatly arranged to form a solid "little house" (scientists call it a crystal structure). However, quartz and glass are not close relatives! Quartz is naturally occurring, while glass is artificially produced from sand as a raw material. They may look similar, but they are actually quite different. Among the quartz family, ultra-pure quartz is the most outstanding "top student"! How clean is it? If you have one ton of ultra-pure quartz, the total amount of impurities in it is less than a small spoonful of salt!
